Gordian III [Marcus Antonius Gordianus Pius], the young grandson of Gordian I and heir to the fortune of the Gordiani, was made Caesar by the short-lived emperors Balbinus and Pupienus and came to the throne after their murders. He seems to have been very popular, and no ancient source has anything bad to say about him. He initially ruled under the tutelage of the Senate, but later, in 241 when he was 16, Gordian appointed the highly capable Timesitheus as his praetorian prefect and chief advisor, sealing their alliance by marrying his daughter Tranquillina.
